Key Foundational Elements in Catholic Tradition
Foundations in Faith
The VACPSP is the only Association that is Victorian, Catholic and for Primary Principals
Catholic education is integral to the mission of the Church to proclaim the Good News. The role of a Principal is fundamental to the maintenance and development of the mission and identity of the school. As spiritual and educational leaders, Principals are uniquely skilled and positioned to generate a Catholic culture and identity and the lifelong learning that fosters the formation of the whole person.
To ensure that Principals are empowered to remain as leaders to their community, a strong and active professional association is paramount to building the personal and professional capacity of Principals. Through the active pursuit of its vision and mission in all functions and decision making, the VACPSP has advanced the support available to and lived experience of Catholic primary school Principals in Victoria. The VACPSP leads the way for Principals’ professional associations across the country with its innovative and preeminent member representation.
The VACPSP is proud to have it’s Foundations in Faith.
This means as an Association, we:
- are inspired by Scripture and Tradition (Theological)
- encourage a personal relationship with Jesus and are centred upon him (Christological)
- discern the presence and action of the Spirit in people’s lives (Pneumatological)
- are attentive to the mission of God in a graced world (Missional)
- foster understandings of and attachment to the Church (Ecclesial)
- encourage active participation in the worship life of the Church (Sacramental)
- enable collaboration with other people of faith (Ecumenical/Interfaith).
For over 200 years across Australia, our Catholic school communities have been stories of “diversity and inclusion, resilience and persistence, commitment to improvement and innovation, great hope and faith in God and the human spirit”. (Extract, Humble Beginnings, Celebrating 200 years of Catholic Education).
Specifically in Victoria, since the first school was opened in 1839, clergy, religious and lay leaders have been at the forefront of this commitment; progressive thinkers with the faith formation, a love of learning and ensuring children and young people are the centre of this endeavour.

The VACPSP acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the many lands that encompass our Catholic primary schools across Victoria – Dioceses of Ballarat, Sale, Sandhurst and the Archdiocese of Melbourne. The VACPSP recognises the Traditional Custodians’ culture and the continuing spiritual connection to land, sea and waters.
The VACPSP pays our respect to their Elders past, present and emerging and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who live, work, teach and learn within Catholic education in Victoria.
We commit to working together to create culturally safe schools for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to learn and thrive. We commit to working together for reconciliation, justice and treaty.
VACPSP. Better, Together.
